UC Irvine School of Medicine is home to one of the nation’s oldest and most innovative programs in hospital medicine, a growing specialty whose core mission is to improve the quality and safety of patient care in hospital settings.

Founded in 1998, UC Irvine’s multidisciplinary hospitalist program has grown to encompass the following medical specialties: internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, geriatrics, pulmonary/critical care, adult and pediatric infectious diseases, preventive medicine, palliative care and perioperative medicine.

Working in tandem with nurses, pharmacists and other patient-care specialists, this cohesive group of physicians has led efforts to improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital stays and strengthen the overall quality of healthcare at UC Irvine Medical Center. This core group also trains the university’s medical students, nurse practitioner students, residents and fellows in the practice of inpatient medicine.

Their work also has helped to vault the medical center into the top tier of the nation’s hospitals, according to US News & World Report and the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Among teaching hospitals, our UC Irvine hospitalist program has achieved one of the lowest mortality, length-of-stay and readmission rates.

Many of our faculty members have been leaders in shaping inpatient care nationally, performing health-outcomes research, and they have published articles on hospital medicine, palliative care, patient safety and quality, and medical education. The Advisory Board Company in Washington, D.C., has cited UC Irvine’s hospitalist program as one of the best in the country, a role model for others to emulate.

At UC Irvine Medical Center, our hospitalists ensure that inpatients are seen as often as needed. Because they are versed in all aspects of best hospital practices, these physicians also are able to instantly modify treatment as new medical information becomes available.

This integrated multispecialty approach has led to closer collaboration, faster consultations and a more systems-oriented approach to improving patient outcomes. Experience has shown that this coordinated effort helps to prevent medical complications. It also results in shorter hospital stays and lower patient costs.

Our faculty members have used this expertise to develop innovative curricula in inpatient hospital medicine for medical students, residents and community physicians. We also teach the business of medicine, palliative care and perioperative medicine, and we train our students and residents to honor personal values, spirituality and to improve end-of-life care.

UC Irvine’s outstanding hospitalist faculty members are dedicated to ensuring that each patient receives the finest, safest and most compassionate care.
