Research Continuity at UCI School of Medicine

Due to COVID-19, the UCI Office of Research has mandated that only critical research may be pursued at UCI. Critical research means essential experiments and the essential personnel to carry them out. These activities are in most cases experimental research in university laboratories and certain clinical trials. Therefore, all SOM faculty and researchers supervising laboratories or dry lab spaces are required to complete and submit revisions to the SOM Research Shut Down Plans/Critical Research Exception Approval Form. This form will allow researchers to:

  • verify that that non-critical research under their supervision is being shut down
  • request to continue critical research projects
  • provide updates regarding critical research projects

After the form is submitted, a faculty committee approves or denies the request to continue critical research and an email is sent regarding their decision. If a PI is allowed to continue critical research projects, it is imperative that the research team follows UCI Office of Research guidelines regarding social distancing and adheres to a stringent hygiene plan to maintain approved status.
