Guidance for Clinical Researchers

SOM Research Development Unit

The School of Medicine Research Development Unit (RDU) is here to help along every step of the way. Please contact the RDU team at RDU services include:

  • Orienting investigators to grant agency funding priorities and trends to develop a strategic approach to apply for funding.
  • Conducting targeted funding opportunity searches via an online request form.
  • Connecting you to other UCI researchers pursuing related research
  • Facilitating proposal pre-reviews by subject matter experts.
  • Assisting with drafting letters of institutional support and boilerplate content.
  • Connecting investigators with collaborators across campus & core resources.

The RDU unit also administers the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP), a 2-year program providing physician scientists with intensive mentorship and opportunities to apply for their first independent, federally funded awards (K08, K23) or other equivalent awards. This pilot program is running from March 2021-2023. Applications are currently closed, but if you have any questions, please reach out to the RDU team at Resources for this program are continually updated here; many are useful to all clinicians pursuing research.

Incentive Plan

  • There is currently an Incentive Plan for New Research Proposal Submissions by Clinical Faculty (CFRIP).
    • Federal, state and foundation grant submissions (no industrysupported grants) with $75k minimum per year in direct costs
    • Clinical faculty eligible: Clin-X Series, In-Residence, HS Series & Adjunct (not in-Line series)
    • Eligible Grant Dates of Submission: Jan. 1, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2022
    • Incentive Plan Details:
      • Scored grants: $500
      • Funded grants: $1000
      • Funds can be allocated as unrestricted funds or z-payment
    • If more than one clinical faculty submit the grant proposal, the incentive(s) would be shared.
  • To be eligible for these funds, please fill out the CFRIP Intent to Submit form prior to submitting your proposal to the sponsor. We can also assist you with your proposal.

  • Yes! You can use PIVOT, our university-sponsored search tool, which will allow you to create searches and receive updates.  The UCI Office of Research provides additional resources here.

How can I find other UCI researchers in my area?

How is a Biosketch different that my CV?  

  • The Biosketch is a standardized format, most commonly used by NIH and other agencies. Refer to the NIH website for the template and examples. We can review and provide suggestions.  Contact us at
