Pilot Funding for Collaborative Research

The School of Medicine and the School of Biological Sciences are collaborating for a second year on a pilot funding program to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations that facilitate innovative research in novel areas of investigation between researchers of the two schools. This mechanism is intended to support early-stage research in any area that requires preliminary data necessary to compete for extramural funding.

To be considered, projects must have one or more principal investigators (PIs) from each school. PIs who have status for submitting funding proposals to external sponsors are eligible to apply. Junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply. The same PI may be named on multiple applications, provided that each application is scientifically distinct. However, a PI will receive only one award; 2017-2018 pilot program awardees are not eligible for the 2018-2019 competition.

Applicants may request up to $50,000 for a one-year period. Awardees are expected to submit reports on their project progress and submit grant proposals to federal agencies and private foundations.

Selection critieria

Applications will be judged competitively based on the likelihood that the proposed research plan and scope of work will result in robust preliminary data to support strong proposals for extramural funding. Other important considerations include the scientific merit and overall feasibility of the proposed plan, the diversity of teams, the level of effort and contributions of each researcher and the distribution of project funding, as well as the effective use of requested resources.

For questions or proposal development assistance, PIs are encouraged to contact Tara Massimino, director of research development for the School of Medicine's Office of Research, and Melinda Gormley, research development officer for the School of Biological Sciences.

Applications are due Monday, July 2, 2018.
