PhD candidate Autumn Holmes, Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, is the recipient of the first 2017 Dr. Lorna Carlin Scholar Award. The School of Medicine is grateful to Dr. Lorna Carlin for supporting promising graduate student research. Ms. Holmes is advised by Professor Bert Semler.
PhD Candidate Sarah Cross, Anatomy & Neurobiology (advised by professor Frances Leslie), was awarded a 2017-18 UCI Public Impact Fellowship. Ms. Cross seeks to understand the neurobiological consequences of concurrent tobacco and alcohol use during adolescence, with a focus on how the kappa opioid receptor system is affected. The award supports student research demonstrating the potential to significantly improve or enrich life.
Harwood Garland, MS student, Biomedical and Translational Science, presented his health policy paper, "Should Military Service Members Be Protected Under the Common Rule?" to the Pi Gamma Mu Triennial Convention in Kansas City, November 3, 2017. Mr. Garland is advised by Drs. Sheldon Greenfield and Joel Adelson.
Harwood Garland, MS student, Biomedical and Translational Science, presented the keynote at the American Chemical Society awards dinner, May 2017. (Website, Photos) He also co-presented his work on methane and landfills at the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference with professor Donald Blake, July 2017 (Website). Mr. Garland is advised by Dr. Sheldon Greenfield.
Harwood Garland’s abstract, co-authored by Drs. Ralph Clayman and Ramy Yaacoub, was published in the Journal of Urology (April 2016): "Evaluation Of Global Continental Urology Residency Training Programs" (Journal of Urology Link). Mr. Garland is an MS student in the Biomedical and Translational Science Program.
