Stanley Behrens Fellows in Medicine, 2017 — Call for Nominations

The UC Irvine School of Medicine’s Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce the 2017 Stanley Behrens Fellows in Medicine Program (SBFM).  Each year, one outstanding fellow will be selected through a competitive process based on academic performance and significance of the research.

The Stanley Behrens Fellows in Medicine program recognizes the importance of supporting the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of scientific discovery.

Award information

The total funding package of $20,000 includes:

  • Research support totaling $13,000
  • Professional Development expenditure allocation of $2,000
  • Summer stipend bonus of $5,000 to be paid directly to the student. This stipend is not to replace an existing stipend, but is intended to be a supplement.


  • Nominees must be current UC Irvine School of Medicine PhD students
  • Nominees must be in their third, fourth or fifth year of study
  • Nominees must have a minimum UC Irvine GPA of 3.7 through Winter 2017
  • Nominees must be willing to present a seminar on their research, attend donor events and be featured on the School of Medicine Graduate Studies website.
  • Nominees must be available for an interview on May 3, 2017

Preference will be given to students involved in research addressing the following general topics:

  • Stem-cell research and its application in regenerative medicine (diabetes, heart disease, neural tissue, spinal cord, brain etc.)
  • Epigenetics of human disease
  • Regulation of gene expression in cancer development and disease
  • Molecular basis of immunosenescence and inflammation (aging, Alzheimer’s, ALS, MS)
  • Microbiome and disease
  • Mechanisms of infection and disease
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Methods of imaging scar tissue and/or mapping areas of disease through imaging technologies
  • Brain signaling and behavior

Additional areas of research preference include:

  • Neuronal stem-cell replacement for optic neuropathies
  • Charcot diabetic arthropathy and foot-ankle deformities causing arch collapse
  • Alzheimer’s disease cures
  • Finance depletion/medical resources near end of life
  • Liver trauma, fatty liver disease, fatty acid resistance/synthesis, cirrhosis
  • Gastric manifestations of Parkinson’s disease

Application process

The completed, signed nomination packet for each nominee should be emailed by the department Management Services Officer or Chief Administrative Officer to the Office of Graduate Studies.

Each nomination must consist of a single pdf file, and contain the following scanned items in order:

  • Completed Stanley Behrens Fellows in Medicine Department Nomination form
  • Completed Stanley Behrens Fellows in Medicine Student Information Sheet
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • A confidential letter of recommendation from the nominee’s faculty advisor

Each nomination packet must be saved as follows: SBFM2017-DEPARTMENT NAME-NOMINEE LAST NAME-NOMINEE FIRST NAME. (For example, SBFM2017-MYDEPARTMENT-ANTEATER-PETER.)
