Erik D. Barton, MD, MBA

Erik D. Barton appointed Emergency Medicine chair

June 11, 2014 -- Erik D. Barton, MD, MBA, has been named the new chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine Health and will begin on June 16.

Barton, of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, was Chief of Emergency Medicine for the past 12 years and a professor of surgery in the Division of Emergency Medicine.

"Dr. Barton is well known for his excellent organizational capabilities, energy, and vision," said UC Irvine School of Medicine Dean Ralph V. Clayman, MD.  "It is a delight to welcome him to UC Irvine Health.  I have no doubt that under his leadership the excellence we have come to know in our Department of Emergency Medicine will only continue to grow in all aspects of our Discover.Teach.Heal mission."

Barton obtained his bachelor of science degree from UCLA, has a masters in exercise physiology from the University of Texas and completed his medical degree at UC San Diego, where he remained for his internship and residency.

He most recently earned an MBA from the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Physicians. He holds professional memberships in several organizations, including the AMA, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine. He is listed among “America’s Top Emergency Physicians."

During his tenure, Barton started the emergency medicine residency training program and a number of fellowship programs in Utah. He has also been the recipient of numerous teaching awards and leadership honors; published 50 peer review articles and a near equal number of monographs/book chapters; and he is a co-editor of the textbook "Emergency Medicine: Clinical Essentials."

He is currently working on two development grants, one with the Air Medical Research Institute and another with Fortis Healthcare in India for global health training and development.
