Nov. 5, 2013 - Dr. Steven Potkin, professor of psychiatry & human behavior at UC Irvine, has received a one-year, $100,000 award from National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression to further his research using brain imaging as a novel strategy to discovery new risk genes for mental illness.

A NARSAD award is one of the highest distinctions in the field of mental health research, and it is awarded to researchers by the Scientific Council of the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.

The mission of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is to alleviate the suffering caused by mental illness by awarding grants that will lead to advances and breakthroughs in scientific research.

Previous awardees include Nobel Prize winners Eric Kandel and Paul Greengard.

Potkin leads the Functional Biomedical Informatics Research Network, which involves a consortium of 12 other U.S. universities and collaborators from around the world in an effort to standardize tools and techniques in large-scale studies to understand brain disease and illness.
