Welcome from the Vice Dean for Research

Suzanne B. Sandmeyer, PhD, vice dean for research
UC Irvine School of Medicine
Suzanne B. Sandmeyer, PhD, UC Irvine School of Medicine's vice dean for research, holds the Grace Beekhuis Bell Chair of Biological Chemistry.

Welcome to the Office of Research in the UC Irvine School of Medicine. Our mission is to further basic and applied research to enable discoveries for improved diagnostics and analytics, as well as to enhance prevention, treatment and cures for our patients.

We do this through a variety of mechanisms.

  • We coordinate our activities with those of the UC Irvine Office of Research to ensure that our investigators operate in an arena where they have access to the most current technologies.
  • We provide strong administrative support for our faculty members as they seek funding from federal agencies, industry, foundations and private philanthropy.
  • We work with the university's applied innovation group to bring our faculty innovators together with target audiences.

Resources

The School of Medicine has about 750 full-time faculty members among 26 departments and 17 school research centers. In addition, we have collaborative relationships with the VA Long Beach Health System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, CHOC Children’s Hospital of Orange County and other affiliated hospitals.

As the School of Medicine Office of Research, we interact regularly with about 20 of the university's interdisciplinary research centers and a similar number of shared-resource facilities. Our key research centers include:

In fiscal year 2016-17, research expenditures of investigators within the School of Medicine exceeded $100 million.

Priorities

Our recent School of Medicine hiring initiative considered proposals from more than 20 groups to identify key research areas for faculty development. This process resulted in setting research priorities in:

  • Cancer
  • Adaptive cell therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
  • Epilepsy
  • Neuroinflammation in viral and non-viral diseases of the central nervous system
  • Developmental neuropathology

Faculty development also is occurring in research areas that are related to infectious disease, immunology, cardiovascular disease, microbiome and bioinformatics.

In addition, imaging, genomics, statistics and bioinformatics are key areas of focus for ongoing infrastructure development.

All of these initiatives support the goals set out in the UC Irvine Health Strategic Plan, which targets building our faculty in high impact areas and enhancing our infrastructure.

The future

As the largest school in the recently named Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, we are excited about the opportunities presented by the Samuelis’ gift of $200 million dollars to better understand the complexities of human health with multidisciplinary research approaches aimed at integrating knowledge stemming from genomics and proteomics, chemistry and the relationship of metabolism and environment to health.

Thank you for your interest in the Office of Research.

Sincerely,

Suzanne B. Sandmeyer, PhD
